Male yeast infection

Yeast infections are not only for women. Men get them too. They just don't talk about it as much. There has been many articles and books written about women and yeast infections. But not much is said about men and yeast infections. Men can get yeast infections the same way women do. However, they may not have noticeable symptoms like women do. This is due to the fact that men tend to carry the yeast infection inside their urethra. The urethra is the channel inside your penis that the urine travels through to exit from your body. If you do develop symptoms of a yeast infection the symptoms would include:

• Itching around the head and tip of the penis.

• Burning around the head and tip of the penis.

• Small red, itchy bumps can appear around the head and on the tip of the penis.

• The tip of the penis may become very red and inflamed.

• Thick, white discharge from the penis. Occasionally, the discharge will have a yeasty smell.

The risks factors for you to develop a yeast infection are much the same as women. These risk factors include:

• Sexual transmission. Having sex with someone who has a yeast infection is the easiest way to catch one. Two people can continue to pass a yeast infection back and forth if only one partner gets treatment. It is very important for both partners to get treated to stop the cycle of transmission.

• Antibiotic use. This is less common in men than women, but extended antibiotic use in men can kill off the good bacteria that is holding the yeast in check. Once given the chance, the yeast will grow and flourish into a full blown yeast infection.

• Diabetes. Men with diabetes have a higher risk for yeast infection due to the higher levels of sugar in their urine. Yeast thrives on sugar.

To treat a yeast infection, you may opt to try over the counter creams such as Monistat. This may work for some men, however if the yeast infection is up inside the urethra, a cream on the outside may not be effective enough. A trip to the doctor is the best idea. The doctor can make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe an oral treatment such as Diflucan. Make sure that you and your partner get treatment at the same time. Nothing is more maddening than playing yeast infection tag. Both of you must get treated to break the cycle of re-infection. Don't be embarrassed to confide in your doctor about your yeast infection symptoms. He has heard it all before. He will be able to advise you on your best treatment option to cure your male yeast infection.
