The cause of yeast infections

Yeast infections are quite common and it is estimated that every woman will have at least one in her lifetime. Yeast is a fungus that is scientifically referred to as Candida. The specific type of fungus that is responsible for a yeast infection is candida albicans. This type of yeast, as well as other strains of yeast, are normally found on human skin and in areas of moisture such as the mouth and vagina. A bacteria called Lactobacillus acidophilus keeps the yeast in control. As long as there is a good balance between the yeast and the bacteria there is no problem. But once that balance is interrupted a yeast infection can occur. There are several things that can cause an imbalance. They are;

Antibiotic use. This is a major cause. Antibiotics work by killing off the bacteria that is making you sick. However, it is also killing off the bacteria in your body that keeps the growth of candida in check. A lot of women will develop symptoms of a yeast infection after finishing a course of antibiotics.

Birth control pills or being pregnant. These are a common cause of yeast infection because of the increased level of estrogen caused by birth control pills and pregnancy. High levels of estrogen causes changes in the vaginal environment, making it a perfect place for fungus to grow.

HIV and other diseases that affect the immune system can cause yeast infections by upsetting the balance of yeast and bacteria in your body.

Wearing tight jeans or clothing. Tight clothing will hold moisture in and promote yeast growth. Panty hose or non-cotton underwear will do the same.
• Frequent douching or use of vaginal sprays can also cause yeast infections.

Your menstrual cycle. Some women will experience yeast infection symptoms right before the start of their period. The hormones in your body will release more sugar right before your period starts which will cause yeast to grow. The symptoms usually subside during or right after your period ends.

Sex. With some women, frequent sex can cause a yeast infection because semen will upset the acidic balance of the vagina, allowing a yeast infection to grow.

A vaginal yeast infection is not considered a sexually transmitted disease but it is possible for men to develop symptoms after intercourse with an infected partner. If you have any of the risks factors listed above and develop the following symptoms you probably have a yeast infection and will need treatment. The symptoms are:

• Itching in the vaginal or vulvar area. For men, it is itching and possibly a red rash around the head and tip of the penis.

• Soreness in the vaginal area.

• Pain during intercourse and urination.

• Vaginal discharge. This is not always present, but when it does occur, the discharge is usually odorless and has a whitish, thick appearance with a consistency like cottage cheese.

Remember, yeast infections are common and curable. However, if you have recurrent yeast infections and your partner has been treated., let your doctor know. You could have an underlying health problem.
